This 13th edition of the 10 question(s) Q&A series features an up coming producer by the name of Applejuce Kid. This North Carolina based producer, in a short space of time has already notched up 8 beat battle championships, 2 official remix projects, multiple collaborations with the likes of MC Lyte, Wale, Camp Lo and more. This is one producer you most definitely need to be checking for over the next few years. The Applejuce Kid sits down with us to talk about his new projects, his collaborations and what the hell Freebass 808 is.
Dub MD: Apple juice Kid, what’s good fam? For those who don’t know, could you just give a short review of what you’ve experienced in your music career up until now?
Applejuce Kid: I am a producer and drummer from North Carolina. I am a 8 time beat battle champion, released “Miles Remixed” and “The Remix Project” albums with okayplayer and illroots, and produced tracks for Camp Lo, MC Lyte and Wale.
Dub MD: Coming from North Carolina, how does coming from there shape your attitude to the music/culture? and what do you think of the N.C. music scene right now?
Applejuce Kid: I think it makes me think outside the box a little more, and gives me more freedom and time to create since there are not the distractions and pressure of living in a big city. I think the North Carolina’s scene is great, with 9th Wonder developing projects there, Phonte and Nicolay producing great music, and the Indie Rock scene with some great bands as well.
Dub MD: Your always working in the studio on various projects, do you have any new collaborations in the works we need to lookout for? what are they? and what can heads out there expect from them?
Applejuce Kid: Yes, I just finished a track with Grammy nominated jazz singer, Nneenna Freelon called “Freedom” with The Beast and Freebass 808. Freebass 808 is my project with Suede from Camp Lo. I am working with some DJ’s too, Terry Urban and Mick Boogie, and UK DJ’s 13th Tribe and LoveSoul on some projects. I also have a yoga instructor and singer songwriter Allison Dennis I am working with called “The Light Revolution”, as well as several other singer/songwriters, and MC’s I am excited about.
Dub MD: You just released a new mixtape this month, called “The Remix Project”, what’s the concept behind that project and why should everyone download it over the hundreds of other mixtapes out there?
Applejuce Kid: It is different since there are no vocalists. It is my band recreating/remixing familiar songs, playing it live, and mashing up different genres from House to Hip Hop to Bhangra.
Dub MD: “My Sweetie” is the new track you produced for Wale, which is all over the internet right now, how did that collaboration come about? and is there any more tracks with Wale in the pipeline?
Applejuce Kid: The collaboration happened through Wale’s manager Dan Weissman / Elitaste. He and Wale asked me to flip a sample of a popular Nigerian Disco song, and they liked what i did. I am working on a series of remixes for “My Sweetie” that I think the world is going to dig.
Dub MD: Where do you get the inspiration to make the type of music you do? what is the beatmaking process like when it comes to working on your projects?
Applejuce Kid: I get a lot of it from traveling, other producers, other genres, thinking about what will make people dance, and to possibly shift the world in a better place. For the beatmaking process, I like to combine the electronic with the live elements, and constantly combine genres as well.
Dub MD: Freebase 808, can you tell us a little about that? and how did your relationship with Camp-Lo and Ski come about? and what are you planning to do with that in the future?
Applejuce Kid: Freebass 808 is a psychedelic, revolutionary, genre bending project with me producing and playing drums, and Suede Galactic on the vocals. Through my friendship with Suede I have worked with Cheeba on the Camp Lo tracks, and Ski on many co-productions. They are incredible people to work with, highly creative, and I feel honored to be making music with them.
Dub MD: What do you think is your most defining and unique characteristic that sets you apart from every other producer out there? and how would you describe your style to those who still haven’t heard your music?
Applejuce Kid: I think it is because I am a drummer, and a producer, and attempt to think outside the box as much as possible. I would say if Swizz, ?uestlove, Jon Brion, Mark Ronson and Diplo had a producer baby, it would be me.
Dub MD: You’ve got a lot of support from hip hop fans online, How important do you feel the internet is to underground hip hop these days? do you think its helping or hurting the game in the long term?
Applejuce Kid: I think it is helping shift the power back to the artists, and the grassroots level. I love it, and appreciate all the support and feedback from every place I receive it.
Dub MD: What is on tap for The Apple juice Kid for the rest of 2009 and beyond? do you have anything to say to the fans? anything you wanna get off your chest? any shout outs?
Applejuce Kid: Yes, on tap is a new website, movement, and vintage futuristic music. Iloveapplejuice.com will be launching in 2010, with a record label, fashion line and non-profit organization. Lots of projects will be coming out of my team, that I am very excited about. Thank you to everyone for the support, and I look forward for the world to hear and react to some of the new music I have cooking right now.
Please visit www.applejuicekid.com to check out all the current music and projects. Things to get off my chest/shout outs? I love the movie Zeitgest Addendum, Jivamukti Yoga, eating Ayruvedic food, reading The New Earth, and find it funny that Cougars is now a cultural phenomenon. Thanks so much. Stephen aka Apple Juice.
