After a short hiatus, the 10 Question Q&A Sessions, is back in full effect! For this weeks session we got the chance to chop it up with one of the DMV’s premier producers. Judah is a producer that has been reppin the D.C. hip hop scene for years now, but over the past few years has started spreading his sound to a worldwide audience, working with artists such as Wale, Cormega, Pastor Troy, C-Rayz Walz and Stat Quo to name a few. Along with having his own record label Strange Music and bringing out his flagship artist RAtheMC, he was just recognized as Complex Magazine and Grey Goose’s rising icon, he is definitely someone who looks set to takeover in the next few years. Judah sits down with us to chat about his past and presents projects, the DMV music scene and what sets him apart from every other producer out there right now.
Dub MD: Judah, what’s good fam? For those who don’t know, could you just give a short review of what you’ve experienced in your music career up until now?
Judah: What up homie! Man I make records wit artist. I’m considered at producer! (Laughs) I have worked with some “famous” artists and some not so “famous” and some that weren’t “famous” at the time but recently got “famous”. (Laughs) Let me stop playing man! I’m a producer from the nations capital! Washington D.C.
Dub MD: Coming from Washington D.C., how does coming from there shape your attitude to the music/culture? and what do you think of the DMV music scene right now?
Judah: Well there has been no identifiable hip hop culture until lately. Especially with this whole “DMV” movement. I mean Hip-Hop has been serious in D.C., MD and VA since the 80′s but it serious now. My music is aggressive and that comes from being from D.C. and I used to love the DMV music scene but its wack now. A lot of rappers and beat makers just putting out cyber trash because no one wants to work a 9-5 these days. They just wanna rap successful.
Dub MD: Your always working in the studio on various projects, do you have any new albums/collaborations in the works? what they called? and what can heads out there expect from them?
Judah: Yeah I just finished a tape with DJ Benzi and a dope artist name Greenspan, working on a few tapes with clothing brands, some video games and some other stuff. I just like to put it out. Promo will be coming soon so that will tell you enough.
Dub MD: What have you got planned over the next few years for your label Strange Music, and do you have any new artists on the label we need to lookout for?
Judah: Put this next RAtheMC tape out and then her official album which will be for sale, yeah for sale you “free whores” (Laughs) and after that album I’m gonna sign a new artist!
Dub MD: What do you think of the commercialisation of Hip Hop right now, do you think its showing respect to its pioneers? and do you feel you get proper respect for what you’ve done and are still doing the game now?
Judah: Its America so commercialisation is always gonna happen but I don’t think I get a lot of respect but I still got work to do and I mean a lot of work. But real people that follow me know what I do and I can’t ask for more. I love where I’m at and what I’m doing. I just got recognized by Complex Magazine/Grey Goose and B.E.T. as a rising icon. Can’t many say that some I’m good bro.
Dub MD: You released a new mixtape a couple of months back, called “The DMV Makes, The Industry Takes”, whats the concept behind that project and why should heads download it over the hundreds of other mixtapes out there?
Judah: That tape was to show the world how Go-Go music was raped by a lot of “industry artist” I gave history and names etc, people love the tape and learned some stuff along the way. And they should download it because I’m involved (Laughs) and plus they learning some musical history instead of just hearing rappers talk about themselves. (Laughs)
Dub MD: Where do you get the inspiration to make the type of music you do? what is the beatmaking process like when it comes to working on your projects? and why do you think musicians that keep integrity in their music, never make a real mark on soundscan?
Judah: Man, I make beats when I’m inspired by a song or a project or something I see. I don’t sit in the studio all day and make beats. That’s get old after about 2 days (Laughs). I just make records when I’m inspired.
Dub MD: What do you think is your most defining and unique characteristic that sets you apart from every other producer out there? and how would you describe your style to those who still haven’t heard your music?
Judah: I set myself apart from other beat makers because I’m in the studio with artist while they doing my records, I handle business and I provide opportunity outside of just give you a beat and my style is aggressive.
Dub MD: You’ve got your own blog out there right here, that caters strictly to the DMV called “ForTheDMVOnly”, why did you decide to create that and how important to do think the internet is to up coming artists these days?
Judah: I created the blog as just a “whatever” when I was talking to my home girl herfection and then it blow up into something big and I was like wow! Nahright don’t post our stuff unless it wale so I created a DMV version of Nahright so the world can come and see. (Laughs)
Dub MD: What is on tap for Judah for the rest of 2009 and beyond? do you have anything to say to the fans? anything you wanna get off your chest? any shout outs?
Judah: Man, just to stay healthy, love life and smile and keep banging on the MPC! Shoutout to Strange Music and the DMV.
