MP3 Player & ATM Machine = Profit

A British gang lead by Maxwell Parsons carried out a string of ATM bank fraud using your every day MP3 player. The group copied the audible data transmission noises, similar to a fax or modem and re translated them later back to data on a computer. They tallied up an impressive bill of nearly $380,000 ($200,000 GBP) before Parsons was stopped for performing an illegal U-Turn.

This goes to show you, kids, don’t pull U’ies.

  1. The link to the original article isn’t working. I still don’t get how they’ve done it — did they clone the card and use the MP3 player to record the pin (something similar to the phone DTFM sounds)? It’s scary that ATM’s have such poor security!

  2. Thanks Sebastian. I’ve gone and fixed the link and updated it to a new source. I think they ran a software over the mp3 player which was connected to the ATM. Chances are they did have cloned card info on their program and that was pushed back to the mp3 player. Yeah I wish there was a better type of security besides magnetic tape and RFID’s. Both are so insecure!
