Comic Review: Deadpool – Merc With A Mouth #5

Comic Review: Deadpool Merc With A Mouth #5

So another Friday, another comic review. Since I’ve gotten back into reading comic books, I’ve been dumb selective – I took it back to my roots, but realized that most of the X-Men books don’t interest me (although I think their crossovers have been some of the illest). I need action, comedy and ill imagery – nothing says all of that like Deadpool’s comics. I feel like a herb, though, because I fucked with Deadpool’s character back when Fox had the original X-Men cartoon show, but now, maybe with the Wolverine movie, Deadpool is super in fashion… so much so that he’s got 3 books touching down at the same time! Thing is, not all series can be the illest, and in my humble opinion, Deadpool: Merc With A Mouth is the best of the bunch!

Now, what does a good Deadpool comic need? Wacky storyline – check. MWAM follows DP on the hunt for the severed Zombie Deadpool head, which both Hydra and A.I.M. are trying to weaponize; he got sent to the Jungle to rescue it, and happened upon Dr. Betty. Hilarity ensued. What else does a good DP comic need? Comedy! This issue features a number of references: iCarly, Pink, West Side Story and many other pop culture remnants are thrown into this issue, and the others, as was the new Star Wars episodes:

Hilarious. As you can see in that scan, the art is dope, too. I prefer the artwork in the main Deadpool series – it just looks the most realistic (with some breat-enhancements aside), and some of the imagery in MWAM can seem a bit awkward, but given the madcap action throughout the story, it fits very well. And boy is there action: we’ve got laser fights in space, explosives, wicked headshots… all at a pretty dope pacing. And the other plus that this series has over the main DP series: tons more DP. The current Deadpool issue (#17) seemed to touch on more X-Men in the story than DP – although the sight gags and twists that were thrown in work well and are total Deadpool, I saw way too much Wolverine and Cyclops than needed.

All in all, I cop any Deadpool comics that drop, but when I look at which one I ENJOY the most, Merc With A Mouth is the truth. And given some interviews I’ve read in recent months, that series will be turned on its ear!

  1. i have the first two issues of this floating around my house. i get in and out of comics. the first two arent bad.

  2. I’ll peep. Where does this fit in in terms of the timeline of everything?

  3. its not within the larger scope of the Marvel Universe – it has parallels to the Marvel Zombies, but thats w/ the severed head. No Norman Osborn/H.A.M.M.E.R. in this series – that’s for the main Deadpool monthly. Deadpool Team-Up is the same way – but I believe each issue is essentially a one-shot w/ a different Marvel character.

  4. I have to say, I’m glad I’ve already read this. I would have been a little upset to have had the best page in the book spoiled by your pre-emptive reveal of its final panel.
