Comic Review: Amazing Spider-Man #611

Amazing Spider-Man 611

Walk with me for a likkle bit… now, back in the day, I used to be heavy into a few things: Music, Pro Wrestling and Comic Books. When I was a shorty, I didn’t have many friends in my ‘hood, so I went heavy into escapism. As I got older, I started to let go of things… I gave all of my Marvel (and Image) mags to my cousin, and stopped watching wrestling. Oddly enough, as I get older, I find myself going back into my childhood, rediscovering shit that I thought I outgrew. Over the last couple of weeks, something told me to look into reading comics online. Discovering the lovely .CBR file has got me crippled, and going back into my obsession with all things Deadpool, I’m going to start highlighting some new comics that I think you guys need to get into. I won’t always review Deadpool dips, but don’t be surprised if his comics find their way in these reviews. Welcome to khal’s Comic Reviews, round 1.

This week’s selection is Amazing Spider-Man #611, which features a one-shot Deadpool appearance, which is chopped up. DP starts out the comic taking a call for a gig (being a mercenary, he stays doing odd jobs for payola). Cash Still Rules, so DP is on the hunt. We follow Peter Parker going through another humdrum hump day, falling into a comical fight with Lady Stilt-Man (true story). In easily defeating her, he finds out that Deadpool helped him out with her (although it wasn’t really necessary). Following this, they go into a hilarious fight, going off on tangents and breaking the fourth wall at will. What’s fresh is that, with Deadpool, you can do anything – you can drop crazy pop references one minute, and arc a story with a wild set-up that pays off very well. Mostly, you get to play off the scatterbrained dialogues DP conducts, and what I noticed while reading this issue was that DP and Spidey really are cut from the same cloth. One wonders if DP would be a hero if he hadn’t gone through the shit that fucked up his life. Their personalities mirror each other, especially their humor; check out the banter that occurs after Deadpool sets off his ejector boots:

PUN FU

While they spent the majority of the issue duking it out both with fists and with jokes (they even touch on a dope session of The Dozens), this issue was, like I mentioned earlier, a one-shot, although DP does note that they will meet again in Deadpool #19. Deadpool #17 just dropped this week, so give it a few months and we’ll pick this back up then.

The art in this issue was dope – I’ve been seeing a lot of comics come out with this wack look to them, artistically, where shit’s trying to look TOO realistic, but it ends up losing what I liked in it initially. The normal Deadpool issues look like jacked-up caricatures of people, which works fine, but this one is a lil’ dirtier. It suits the zany fast-pace of the action and dialogue, and gets an A in my book.

If you’re not a fan of either character, I doubt dope art and funny dialogue will hook you on this particular issue, but for those looking for a diversion into a new Spider-Man arc, or just wanting to grab all of the Deadpool features you need, grab this one now! (NOTE: Newsarama has a preview of Amazing Spider-Man #612 HERE)

And might I add that I recommend using Midtown Comics – they have a great selection, the site is easy to navigate, and they ship issues early as HELL!

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS:

X-Men Origins: Iceman

Wolverine – Weapon X 06

Dark Reign: The List – The Punisher
