Comic Book Review: Deadpool #18

Told you guys I wouldn’t be reviewing a bunch of Deadpool series, but I can’t help it. I’m on the tail-end of his last solo series, and just finished the latest in his most recent main series, and I’m very impressed with the work that’s being done with my favorite Marvel character.
We’ve all known Deadpool isn’t a mutant, but his closest associations (from his entry in X-Force to his love for Siryn and Copycat) have all been mutant-specific, so toying with Wade being an X-Man was a twisted dream of mine and (I hope) many of you. While the hilarity of his new uniform and pissing of Cyclops (if you picked up X-Force Annual, the “Undeadpool” story is a quick shot of comedy) and Wolverine is needed, we all knew this story would reach its apex and end soon. I didn’t realize Daniel Way had a nice twist on the scenario that showed the demented trickery of Deadpool making the most sense out of such a chaotic time in the X-Men, as well as with Norman Osborn. In thinking back on it, the Deadpool comics are such a reward – those of us who’ve followed comics for a while get to see a lot of older characters fall into this book over the years, but with the X-Men’s “Utopia” event going on, as well as Osborn’s fall coming to a head, it seems like this last arc has been a really fun way of those two specific events converging seamlessly, while giving Wade time to continue his hunt on being a hero – with a dope Spider-man arc starting in issue 19!
All in all, this latest issue was solid all around – while the jokes were kept to a minimum to allow the story to finish, it was still fast-paced, and the payoff was key for both the X-Men and for Deadpool, with the promise of more fun and frenzy to come very soon. The artwork in this series is so slick to me – its realistic without being too dull, with some wicked shots (the bit with Deadpool fighting Colossus was my favorite) thrown into the mix. A solid issue for both the series and the blended arcs, and another $3 well spent.
