Walrus TV Artist Feature: Futura Interview from The Run Up

Ive had to be real patient. It all didn’t happen right away. Even in the midst of the whole gallery art world I thought this was the greatest thing in the world, but there was more.
-Futura

Known for pioneering a more abstract style of graffiti writing, Futura played a major role in the NYCs graffiti scene of the 70s. As the popularity of graffiti art flared in the 70’s and 80’s, Futura’s work was shown alongside artists such as Basquiat and Keith Haring. As his style developed, he began designing, and has collaborated with numerous artists and companies, including The Clash, Supreme, and A Bathing Ape. Get an inside look at his workspace and his love for b movies, video games and, apparently, all things Sony in the interview from “The Run Up,” available to the public for free for the first time, on Walrus TV.

“To Be Young, Gifted, and Black” – Soul Portraits by Corrado Grilli

These pictures are amazing. It makes me feel like I’m looking at huge constellations in  the sky. Each one of these people deserve to be immortalized in this way. They’ve made music that has changed lives on the deepest of levels. None are or were perfect, but through their music, it seemed many of them tried to use their talents to show their just as human as all of us. And in the process blessed us with rhythms, songs, chords, notes and energy that could feed the soul. I tip my hat to each one.

I’ll let Corrado Grilli tell you why he did this:

This is a personal project made to pay a tribute to the best music ever.  The portraits represent Otis Redding, Michael Jackson, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield & Sam Cooke.

Couldn’t agree more. You can go to his website to download the wall papers here. And you can do yourself an even bigger favor and study each one of these artists a little more. They all deserve a little bit of our time.

Walrus TV Artist Feature: Dalek Interview with Ricky Powell from Dithers

They’re just kinda meandering through life, kinda bouncing from one thing to the next, like we all are. We start out empty and just kind of fill ourselves up along the way. Spit out shit, pick up new shit.
-Dalek on his Space Monkey Character

With influences ranging from early American animation to classic Expressionist painters, Dalek’s work is highly character-driven with a distinct design orientation. For this feature, Ricky Powell and Dalek discuss the development of his “iconic Space Monkey character” while getting an interior look at his studio, his then in-progress Alife project, and his extensive vintage spray paint collection. Watch the interview from “Dithers,” available to the public for free for the first time, on Walrus TV.
